Voices from North Waziristan | Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Jun 2014

On June 15, the Pakistan Army launched the Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan, ostensibly in response to two attacks in Karachi, and at the tail end of several weeks of negotiations with a subset of the Tehreek-e-Taliban.

Up to 600,000 people could end up being displaced according to the federal government. Tanqeed visits them in Bannu.

Full–and more–interviews coming soon.

Well done, so important to hear voices of Internally Displaced persons and this echoes what I have heard from several other reporters at Bannu with whom I am in contact. It is a tale of distress and grief at leaving behind homes, livelihood and animals, of people dying on route from heat and exhaustion and IDPs afraid to go to government camps. Many are instead seeking shelter with local families, some are being separated from loved ones in the confusion. Those who did manage to take their animals are unable to give them feed or water… they are dying too, if they live they must be sold at a low price while the price of fodder has increased. We cannot underestimate the impact on families, the sick and the elderly, children vulnerable to disease and missing their schooling.

I can not support military action for this reason but also because the state itself carries out terrorist activities through enforced disappearances, torture in custody, extra- judicial killings, drone strikes and shelling civilians which we have seen previously… the state must first clean out its own backyard before tackling insurgency… such gross hypocrisy and violation of human rights!

    Hello,

I would like to know how can I donate for the IDP of Waziristan. Please email me back with detail so I can help in collecting funds and sending them to the right organization since I do not live in Pakistan and need a reliable source to submit the money too.
